Showmax: Rebranding Africa’s original storytellers

Objective

Africa has always had a rich heritage of storytelling. Showmax wanted to lean into this theme to develop a brand identity that captured the essence of Africa, its vibrancy, diversity, and storytelling heritage. The new visual identity needed to be adaptable and responsive to allow the brand to communicate its range of local and international offerings to viewers throughout the continent.

Solution

Grid developed a unique and ownable design language using the ‘X’ in the Showmax wordmark to convey content and support brand messaging with visual impact. This X design system was implemented across all mediums, delivering highly impactful, engaging, and entertaining social content. It also enabled diverse communications spanning from brand messaging to general entertainment and football.

This design-led thinking guided us in redesigning the Showmax interface to make it responsive and scalable. We prioritised a digital-first approach to ensure users enjoy a seamless experience across all devices. We also created a unique set of profile avatars, drawing inspiration from the new X identity and themed content on the Showmax platform. This enabled viewers to choose and customise their character profiles based on the designs they preferred.

Result

Our rebranding campaign established Showmax as a distinctive and instantly recognisable entertainment brand across the African continent.
